'Inside Out 2' Takes a Deep Dive into Teenage Emotions

Pixar is about to go to a place often reserved for after-school specials and Judy Blume books: The teenage mind.

The anticipated follow-up to Pixar's Academy Award-winning Inside Out (2015) is due out in the summer of 2024. Riley, who was 11 in the original, is a little older (15) in Inside Out 2. But she's still got all the feelings (really, you're never too old to feel those).

Some major casting news has already been announced—comedian Amy Poehler will be back as the voice of blue-haired Joy, a role she was clearly born to play. Here's what else to know.

When is the Inside Out 2 release date?

Inside Out 2 is set for a June 14, 2024 theatrical release. The date is nearly nine years to the day after the original hit theaters (June 19, 2015).

Who are the new emotions in Inside Out 2?

There will be new emotions in Inside Out 2, though the specifics are still a bit gray.

"In many ways, it was really exciting. We knew exactly where we were," Amy Poehler recently spilled in an interview. "We go to the teen brain and we see the madness that lives inside there."

It's unclear what "madness" will mean, and Anger was already an emotion (played by Lewis Black) in the original Inside Out. But it appears the new flick will build on the discussions about normalizing mental health over the last several years.

"A lot has happened since the first film in terms of the emotional intelligence and how we think about mental health and how our emotions can affect us physically, and what's really going on inside our head," Poehler said.

The movie's title is Inside Out 2. Pixar is known for its creative characters, storylines and animation, but the movie giant is keeping the title of the Inside Out sequel simple.
