As far as red carpets go, the Grammys is definitely the most entertaining. We have seen celebrities take huge fashion risks, and though it’s music’s biggest night, the red carpet looks sometimes get more buzz than the show itself. The 2019 Grammy Awards are coming up on Feb. 10, so let’s take a stroll down memory lane and relive some of the most iconic looks from years past.
Let’s start with possibly the most memorable Grammy red carpet look ever, Jennifer Lopez’s green Versace dress from 2000. J.Lo’s dress caused so much buzz on the internet that it actually sparked the creation of Google Images. That plunging neckline will go down in history as one of the most scandalous and unforgettable red carpet looks of all time, and we are still so here for it.
The following year, Christina Aguilera went for a revealing boho dress and cornrows in her hair. If she wore this look today, she would probably receive some flak for cultural appropriation, but she was on the brink of her “Dirrty” phase, so the look matched her music-video aesthetic.
Skip ahead to 2009, when M.I.A. was nine months pregnant on the Grammys red carpet, and she was not subtle about it at all in her polka-dot-accent minidress. She wore the same outfit for her performance with Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. 10 years later, the look is still unforgettable and empowering, and we will always love M.I.A. for it.
You can’t think about the Grammys without remembering some of the wild looks Lady Gaga has rocked on the red carpet. But her 2011 Grammys entrance in an egg pod may be her most bizarre ever. The iconic moment is still talked about and will go down as one of the strangest-of-all-time red carpet entrances.
In 2012, Nicki Minaj followed in Gaga’s footsteps and made quite the entrance. She hired a pretend pope and wore a dress that could have been straight out of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The religious look was a foreshadowing for her performance that night of “Roman Holiday.” Gaga and Minaj were both pioneers in making a red carpet look about way more than just a dress.
How could anyone forget Pharrell’s awkwardly large hat? In 2014 this Vivienne Westwood creation became a viral sensation and took the Grammys red carpet by storm. Later, Arby’s ended up buying the hat for $44,100. If a $44,100 hat isn’t iconic, I don’t know what is.
Only a queen like Rihanna could pull off a gigantic pink gown like this. In 2015 she rocked the look, and by the end of the night she was already a Grammys fashion legend. She was made into tons of memes, but she didn’t care because she slayed this daring look.
In 2017 CeeLo Green turned heads in a full gold ensemble on the red carpet. It was a bizarre head-to-toe outfit that some fans compared to a Ferrero Rocher wrapper. But Green later revealed that the costume was part of his new alter ego, Gnarly Davidson. Green also wore a black Gnarly Davidson costume to another Grammys event.
Cardi B made her Grammys red carpet debut last year in a dramatic, fashionable way, as she does with everything in her life. She wore a structured, tiered white dress with a wing-like silhouette by Ashi. The look stunned fans, and people can’t wait to see what she wears this year.
