Iconic Designer Pierre Cardin Has Died at Age 98
Iconic fashion designer Pierre Cardin has died at age 98. The BBC reported the news on Tuesday (via the AFP agency), revealing that Cardin passed away in a hospital in Neuilly, near Paris.
Cardin's family released a statement to the BBC regarding the designer's death and said, "It is a day of great sadness for all our family. Pierre Cardin is no more ... We are all proud of his tenacious ambition and the daring he has shown throughout his life."
As noted by the BBC, Cardin was born in 1922 in Italy, but spent most of his youth in Saint Etienne, France, where he later established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world. Per ITV News, Cardin "became an apprentice to a tailor at 14," training that would serve him well throughout his dextrous career.
After working with high-profile brands in Paris including Christian Dior, Cardin created his own company in 1950, and became known for his Space Age collections and avant-garde style. Understandably, it wasn't long before he was dressing celebrities like Lauren Bacall and The Beatles.
Tributes have already started flooding in for Cardin on social media. Fashion sound director Michel Gaubert wrote on Instagram, "Pierre Cardin RIP / captured here growing his fashion empire . His legacy is immense , not only for his incredible designs , but also for the way he turned his fashion house into such a fashion empire and creating a business model . RESPECT."
To commemorate his death, the official Pierre Cardin Instagram account shared a quote from the legendary designer: "I have always worked in my own style, which is different from all others. It was always my intention to be different, because that is the only way to last."
