Hyde Park Garden Fair kicks off this weekend
CHICAGO —The Hyde Park Garden Fair, billed as Chicago’s oldest community garden sale, kicked off its catering to perennial plant lovers all across the city Saturday.
“We have herbs, vegetables—all different varieties,” said Paulette Edwards-Armstrong. “Anything you can grow or eat, we carry.”
Now in its 63rd year, volunteers like Edwards-Armstrong come together every spring and fall to make the event happen, and in the process, bring together offerings from several nurseries in the region to the South Side neighborhood.
“I love gardening. It’s a labor of love and every year I grow more and more and more so it’s beautiful, it’s relaxing, I have as stressful job,” Edwards-Armstrong said. “This is a vacation week for me to do this.”

According to volunteers, the Hyde Park Garden Fair is a way for city dwellers to get a jump start on those things that bring color and life during the warmer months.
“There’s nothing better than Chicago and the Midwest for spring planting,” said Jennifer Orr. “It’s wonderful.”
The Hyde Park Garden Fair is run by the non-profit Hyde Park Garden Club, with all proceeds going toward tending local parks and grants to schools and other groups for outdoor education and activities.
