Hillary Clinton pens letter to 8-year-old girl who lost election for class president
Hillary Clinton delivered an encouraging message to an 8-year-old girl who lost an election for class president. In a letter, the former Democratic nominee for president wrote that “it’s not easy when you stand up and put yourself in contention for a role that’s only been sought by boys.”
Martha Kennedy Morales, a third grader at a small private school in College Park, Md., chose to run for class president when her classmates held an election for president and Congress, as the Washington Post first reported. But she lost to a fourth-grade boy by one vote, effectively making her vice president.
Clinton came to know about the 8-year-old’s lost election through her father’s Facebook posts, according to CNN. Since she knew how the girl felt, she decided to send a note advocating the third grader to keep stepping up to be a leader.
“While I know you may have been disappointed that you did not win President, I am so proud of you for deciding to run in the first place,” Clinton wrote to Martha.

“As you continue to learn and grow in the years ahead, never stop standing up for what is right and seeking opportunities to be a leader, and know that I am cheering you on for a future of great success,” Clinton continued.
Martha told the Washington Post she was “very surprised” to receive a letter from the former secretary of state. And while she wishes she had won her election, she told CNN she’ll happily serve as VP.
“It’s disappointing to figure out that you lost something that you fought for really hard and you put a lot of effort into it,” Martha said Sunday on CNN Newsroom.
