Duff, now 35, met the "I Want Candy" singer on the set of the original Disney Channel series, Lizzie McGuire. The pair started dating in 2000 when they were just 13, but their romance was on-and-off before the two called it quits in 2003. During their on-and-off relationship, Carter was also linked to Lindsay Lohan.
“I started dating Hilary on my 13th birthday,” he told CNBC back in 2005, per US Weekly. “I was dating her for like a year-and-a-half, and then I just got a little bored, so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay.”
Duff is now married to Matthew Koma, with whom she shares two kids; Banks, 4, and Mae, 1. The singer also shares their 10-year-old son Luca with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie.
Carter is survived by his 11-month-old son, Prince, and his fiancé, Melanie Martin, who told TMZ, "My fiancé Aaron Carter has passed away. I love Aaron with all my heart and it’s going to be a journey to raise a son without a father. Please respect the privacy of my family as we come to terms with the loss of someone we love greatly. We are still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated."
It's clear that Carter has left a lasting impression on Duff and many others who also paid tribute to the late singer.
