In high heat, when should you water your garden?
BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Many people have gardens, whether it is a flower bed or a vegetable patch, and those gardens need water.
Nearly 3/5 of West Virginia in moderate drought
But when should you go out to give your plants a drink?
Especially in high heat conditions, the timing of your watering is crucial for your plants to grow strong and healthy.
Marty Walker-Owen, a Southern Conversation District Administrative Specialist, said you really only have two options.
“So, when you’re watering either a flower bed or a vegetable garden, you wanna make sure that you do that in the early morning hours or in the late evening,” said Walker-Owen. “You do not want to water midday. You don’t wanna water midday because the heat will actually cause evaporation and it can damage your plants.”
Walker-Owen said when you water you want to make sure that the soil is getting moist two to three inches deep.
She said giving your plants a bit of extra water in especially hot and dry conditions, like what the state is currently experiencing, is just fine.
Focusing your watering on the roots of your plants is what is most important.
