The hidden meaning behind Marisa Tomei's red carpet T-shirt
In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations and the #MeToo movement, Hollywood stars are seemingly more aware than ever that what they wear on the red carpet can have an impact beyond the best dressed list. On Thursday, Marisa Tomei made a statement with a simple T-shirt that said, in English and Spanish, “Radical Women.”
The style choice firmly places Tomei on the side of her fellow female colleagues who have spoken out about abuse in the industry. Tomei’s tee is likely the first of many feminist style signifiers actresses will make in the coming weeks, with awards season kicking into full gear.
And while a clear connection can be drawn between Tomei’s choice in T-shirt and her feminist beliefs (she’s a friend of Ashley Judd, an early Weinstein accuser, and has expressed her views on the current political climate in the film industry and beyond on Instagram), there’s probably more to the style story.

For one, the shirt, it could have been a subtle show of support to Salma Hayek, from Mexico (hence the Spanish), who just published an account of Weinstein’s sexual harassment and deliberate retaliation in the New York Times. “In his eyes, I was not an artist. I wasn’t even a person. I was a thing: not a nobody, but a body,” she wrote.
People reports that actresses may show solidarity at the Golden Globes by dressing in all black on the red carpet. “All female actresses attending the Globes are protesting by just wearing black gowns,” says a source. The move spans presenters and attendees, so prep for a powerful Globes red carpet, a political Globes ceremony, and plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle statements from “Radical Women” on the red carpets to come.
