Now that the holiday season has come and gone, it’s time for the second most wonderful time of the year: awards season! And ofc, you simply CANNOT tune into all the awards shows without having watched the biggest films of 2022. The year’s top contenders include The Whale, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Elvis, and Don’t Worry Darling, among several others, but one buzzy film you may not have on your radar yet is Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical masterpiece The Fabelmans. Lucky for you, we’ve got the scoop on how to watch The Fabelmans as well as everything else you should know.
First things first: What’s the movie about? The coming-of-age drama is loosely based on Spielberg’s own life, as told through the eyes of the fictitious Sammy Fabelman, an aspiring young filmmaker. The cast includes Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Judd Hirsch, and relative newcomer Gabriel LaBelle stars in the flick as Sammy. Apparently, this movie has been a long time coming, as Spielberg first conceived the project nearly two decades earlier…but the wait paid off.
The Fabelmans tallied up a total of seven Oscar nominations, including one for the beloved Best Picture. So far, the film has won two Golden Globes—one for Best Picture and one to Spielberg for Best Director—after receiving five nominations and also scoring 11 Critics Choice nominations. So, wanna see for yourself what all the fuss is about? Read on to find out where you can watch The Fabelmans rn.
When was The Fabelmans released?
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 (where it won the People’s Choice Award, NBD), The Fabelmans began a limited theatrical release on November 11, which Universal Pictures expanded on November 23. And while the flick was admittedly a box-office flop—becoming the lowest-grossing film of Spielberg’s career…womp, womp—all aspects of the movie itself received widespread critical acclaim. If you wanna watch it in theaters, then you should snag tickets while ya still can:
How can you watch The Fabelmans at home?
Don’t feel like making the trek to the movie theater? You’ll be happy to know that you can watch The Fabelmans from the comfort of your couch. Currently, you can rent The Fabelmans for $19.99 or buy the film for $24.99 from digital retailers Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play. Yeah, it’s pricey, but that’s because the movie is still playing in theaters, so the current rental price carries a premium. However, if you’re willing to wait a bit, then the price will eventually go down.
No streaming release date for The Fabelmans has been set yet, but because the movie is distributed by Universal Pictures, it will likely be available on Peacock. New movies can debut on Peacock as soon as 45 days after premiering in theaters, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled! Once the movie arrives on Peacock, it’s expected to be exclusive to Premium ($5/month) and Premium Plus ($10/month) members.
Happy awards season to all who celebrate!
