'Help bring the community together': Penny Candy Store new owner hosts Mother's Day craft event in Live Oak
May 13—As part of the first year as the new owner of the Penny Candy Store in Live Oak, Live Oak native Lorrie Brummett hosted the inaugural Mother's Day craft event on Saturday a day ahead of the annual tradition set to honor mothers around the world.
Brummett, a great-grandmother herself, envisioned a venue for children to come and make handmade gifts for their parents. She wants to do the same thing for Father's Day in June, as well as separate events for upcoming commencement ceremonies.
"I like the idea of the kids coming in and making something with their own hands for their parents because it makes the kids feel good," Brummett said. "My goal is to help bring the community together."
Children were busy painting and creating arts and crafts as early as 9 a.m. on Saturday. Some were with their fathers in order to surprise mom, while other families surprised mom with the finished product followed by a hug. It was all to show respect and love for the one who takes care of them each and every day.
Heather Forsberg of Yuba City brought her son, Owen, and the 7-year-old created a flower vase for his mom. He handed it over to her when it was complete and the two embraced.
It was a beautiful day and it's one that Brummett hopes to continue each May along with a number of other events to celebrate those we love, she said. Brummett noted that the Penny Candy Store needs to be a "fun place for people in the community to come."
Brummett estimated that the Penny Candy Store has been in the community for over four decades and the building is about 100-years-old. The building is currently getting a facelift with a crew working on the outer part of the location, Brummett said. Inside, she said, the store is filled with a variety of candy, snow cones and ice cream.
While shopping during the craft event, Forsberg found a jawbreaker on a stick that she thought about purchasing. Of course her favorite are fruit chews, which are stationed near the one-cent and two-cents merchandise, Forsberg said.
Forsberg hoped to take her fresh candy and new flower vase home to simply relax over the Mother's Day weekend.
