Classes
SOUTH BEND — Downtown South Bend Inc. will offer free yoga, Zumba and more every Saturday through Aug. 31. The program is held at the Gridiron, 122 S. Michigan St. The drop-in classes are free and open to all ages and skill levels. This year, participants are asked to bring a small donation for the Food Bank of Northern Indiana each week or when able. Participants should dress in appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a mat and adequate fluids, and will be required to sign a waiver for the season. Free parking is available on the street and in the Leighton Parking Garage; enter off Jefferson Boulevard. This Saturday’s class includes 8 a.m. Yoga; 9 a.m. Zumba; 10 a.m. Boot Camp. SOUTH BEND — Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana will offer the free class “Therapeutic Fibs, Diversion and Validation” from 10 to 11 a.m. July 8 in the Care Partner Academy. Patty Piechocki, director of the Institute for Excellence in Memory Care, will lead this live/interactive web session. Participants can connect through their computer. ? Blood Pressure Checks — Always Best Care Senior Services will be at the BASC from 10 to 10:30 a.m. July 11 and July 25.
? Hearing Aid Checks — Dr. Michelle Ridenour from Miracle Ear, will be at the center from 2 to 3 p.m. July 16 to check ears for wax, clean hearing aids and answer questions. Call the BASC to register.
? Senior Nutrition — SNS/Meals on Wheels of SW Michigan announces the meal site in the Center is open. Lunch starts at noon. Call Kerri at 269-695-7119 by 10 a.m. Monday-Friday to reserve your meal the next business day. Seating is limited. Ask about home delivery service for qualifying homebound seniors. Must be 60 years or older.
? Pamper Your Feet — Monthly foot clinic through Blessed Feet LLC, beginning at 9 a.m. July 11. Initial appointment fee is $40; all subsequent appointments will cost $30 (checks payable to Blessed Feet LLC). Not covered under any insurance. Call the BASC to schedule an appointment.
? Fireside Chats with Gayla, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 11: Group Chat — bring your topic to the table; July 25: Group discussion on grief.
? Matter of Balance, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 7 to Sept. 25. Program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and improve activity levels for older adults. There are eight two-hour classes led by trained coaches. There is a book fee of $20 payable to Area Agency on Aging, due by July 17. Register by calling 269-695-7119. Space is limited.
MICHIGAN CITY — Franciscan Health Michigan City is partnering with local churches to offer a faith-based diabetes initiative that pairs minority LaPorte County church congregations with the healthcare system and community organizations to bring two diabetes education, prevention and detection mini workshops — free of charge — to the church after Sunday services.
The “Fan Out Diabetes” event features education, screening, insurance enrollment assistance and more.
The next sessions will take place at 12:30 p.m. CDT on July 14 and Aug. 11 at New Disciple Love Fellowship Church, 1411 Pine St. and at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 123 Helen St. Registration is not required, but participants are asked to attend both dates of the session. SOUTH BEND — Unity Gardens Inc. is offering free Yoga in the Garden at 6 p.m. July 11. Bring a yoga mat and towel. Unity Gardens is at 3701 Prast Blvd.
NILES — The Niles District Library, 620 E. Main St., is offering a beginner yoga class, every other Monday, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Community Room. The class is for adults age 18 years and older, and all levels of experience are welcome. Bring a mat, wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. There is no registration required and admission is free. The instructor is Sam Major from Dancing Feet Yoga. Next class is July 8.

? “Alzheimer’s & Dementia 101 — Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Series” from 4 to 5 p.m. July 9 at the Western Branch, 611 Lombardy Drive. Patty Piechocki from the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Service of Northern Indiana will be the guest speaker. Learn the differences between Alzheimer’s and dementia, the theory of Retrogenesis, and how the world could change through the eyes of someone living with a progressive dementia disease.
? “Summer Skin: Scrubs, Soaks, and Soothers” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. July 10 in Classroom E, Community Learning Center, 305 S. Michigan. Take care of your hands as you do your gardening this summer. Learn to make your own sugar scrub and soothing bath salt soak. This class is for adults.

In addition to the 3-D technology, the MMU features a medical exam room and intake area for gathering patient information and education. Support Groups
NILES — The Niles-Buchanan YMCA offers a free, in-person grief support group for adults who have experienced the death of someone significant. This is an open-ended monthly support group, which means you can attend or leave whenever you choose. The group will meet July 10 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA, 905 N.
