In the introduction of her book, Handmade Houseplants, Corrie Beth Hogg-crafter, designer, and DIYer-shares her love for nature and passion for making art, which have always been "intrinsically intertwined."

So after taking a break from city life a few years back to work on an organic farm in northern California, then returning to New York City, she wasn't willing to sacrifice her love of nature for her small Brooklyn apartment-she was going to have both. Since there were no windows in her living room at the time, she had to get crafty. Naturally, as a maker both as a hobby and profession, she decided she was going to make the fiddle leaf fig tree she desperately wanted. And she did so out of paper.

"We’re all accustomed to 'fake' or artificial plants being the not-so-chic plastic variety. With paper versions, there is a touch of amusement and artistry," Corrie told House Beautiful. "Yes, they are also imitations, but upon closer inspection when one realizes they’re made from paper…I often hear a chuckle and an exclamation of, 'Oh paper! Plants I can’t kill!', rather than a disappointed, 'Oh, it’s plastic.""

While artificial plants are becoming more and more realistic, making your own handmade houseplants is a great alternative to (1) spending a fortune on the most realistic options and (2) having a home like everyone else's. Corrie revealed that she is, in fact, a handmade houseplant lady with an eclectic decorating style.

"It’s actually gotten a little out of hand," she shared of her paper plants taking over her apartment, "[they're] everywhere! And, yes, I have real plants as well, I installed a shelf in my dining room window to allow more plants to be sunlit! It’s not an addiction yet, but it’s close!"

As you would imagine for someone with such creativity, Corrie's home is also filled with color and other handmade items. "I am not one for trends or name brand designer furniture. I like to mix vintage with one-of-a-kind finds and pieces I’ve inherited."

To learn how to make your own handmade houseplants, order a copy of Corrie Beth Hogg's book, Handmade Houseplants, and follow the step-by-step instructions. Trust me, they're all just as beautiful as the ones above (and there are a lot of them).
