Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber Want You to Know They Waited Until Marriage to Do It
Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin talked for the first time at length about their summer fling-turned-September marriage to Vogue-and in the interview, they shared a lot: They’re in therapy ("The thing is, marriage is very hard," Baldwin said. "That is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard"). Their first breakup back in 2016 is still causing issues for them. And part of the reason why they rushed to get married after less than four months of dating again is because, well, Bieber was tired of waiting to have sex.
Bieber told Vogue’s writer Rob Haskell that after overcoming his drug addiction years ago, sex was his remaining vice and that he had “a legitimate problem with sex.” When he and Baldwin started dating in June, he was "more than year into a self-imposed tenure of celibacy," as Haskell described it. Bieber said that he chose abstinence to be closer to God. “He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” Bieber said. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”
So yes, Bieber being tired of waiting was part of the reason he and Baldwin got married at a New York City courthouse in September after getting engaged in July...after dating one month. But that wasn’t the only reason, Bieber said: “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life. I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.” Baldwin offered him stability. "I need one thing that’s certain," Bieber said of Baldwin. "And that is my baby boo." (They also, don't you worry, plan on just being young newlyweds right now; Baldwin reiterated again they don't have baby plans for a couple years.)
The two are in therapy now, working through their issues, they told Haskell. One of them is their March 2016 breakup when they first dated, which still affects them today. “Negative things happened that we still need to talk about and work through,” Baldwin told Haskell. “Fizzled would not be the right word-it was more like a very dramatic excommunication. There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.” (At the time, a source told E! that when they initially split, Bieber and Baldwin remained "still close friends, but he is on tour and extremely busy now, so they have not seen each other that much. Bieber and Hailey love each other but have a good understanding where they both stand at the moment." The reality ended up being messier, it turns out.)
But church brought them back together last June, two years after the split. “The common denominator, I promise you, is always church," Baldwin said. "By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends.’ I was like, ‘We’re not?’" And then that Bermuda engagement happened weeks later.
