Guy Fieri Vs. Tiffani Thiessen: Wings
Guy Fieri can never say anything is just “good.” To him, if something tastes good, it’s “rock star,” “righteous,” “homerun”,“capital-T tender,” or “a hot Frisbee of fun.” And don't think that his recipes don't get that special Fieri vocab treatment too. Because obviously they do. Luckily for me, as I searched for the Internet for the best wings, his “Ain’t No Thing Butta Chicken Wing" popped up.
Tiffani Thiessen’s wings aren’t as cleverly named. But honestly, who cares? No one can be Guy Fieri, and "Honey-Ginger Chicken Wings" sound insanely delicious. Also, everyone brings spicy wings to the party, you rarely see a sweeter option, and maybe that's a good thing?
I know what you're thinking. Both recipes, and chefs, are too different. How can we possibly compare? Because when it comes to wings, you just know. People have very strong opinions about them, especially the sauce. We knew our taste testers wouldn't have a problem declaring a winner in the end.
GUY’S RECIPE
Guy’s wings pack some major heat. There’s an ample amount of cayenne pepper in the spice rub, and there’s a full bottle of hot sauce (preferably Crystal, says Guy) in the glaze. PLUS, a jalape?o. There’s also some butter and lime juice whisked in at the end ... so basically it’s a spicier, zestier buffalo sauce.
As for the wings, you can either grill or bake them. I went with the latter and followed Guy’s instructions for 375° for 55 minutes and was a little disappointed; the wings never got crispy! The temperature needed to be higher. But let’s face it. Once the wings are sauced, it doesn’t really matter all the much.
TIFFANI’S RECIPE
Plan ahead! Because you’ll need to start Tiffani’s wings the night before, an aspect of the recipe that's only annoying if you’re a huge procrastinator (like me). First you whisk together honey, lime juice, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and scallions. Use most of this to marinate the chicken overnight, and throw the rest the in a saucepan the next day to make a sticky glaze to brush on the baked chicken.
THE VERDICT
In terms of crispiness, Tiffani’s wings win - they’re much crispier, partly due to the honey and partly because of the higher oven temperature (400°).
As for the taste, our senior video producer said it best. “There are no losers in this battle. But there is definitely a winner.” And that winner is Guy Fieri. America loves buffalo wings, and these are essential buffalo 4.0.
