Ahead of everyone's favorite medical drama returning to Thursday nights, Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff has announced that the show's season 18 finale will be its 400th episode ... if all goes well.
Speaking to TVLine at the SCAD TV Fest, she revealed that although Hollywood has adjusted to filming shows and movies during the coronavirus pandemic, delays are still happening. Though the 400th episode is expected to wrap up season 18, there is still a chance that there might be a hiccup with the air date due to the impact Covid-19 has had on Grey's filming schedule thus far.
“I think that the last episode of our season will be 400 if there are no further COVID delays and we don’t end up dropping an episode,” Krista told the outlet. "That’s a big ‘if.'" As fans know, during the height of the pandemic in the U.S., the series experienced filming delays, which changed expected air dates. While the current season is well underway, Krista acknowledges that it could still be difficult to put together a monumental episode.
Still, she seems to be hopeful that an epic 400th episode will come to fruition. Since premiering in March 2005, Grey's is still going strong and it even earned a season 19. But even after all these years, the executive producer understands that the expectations for the season 18 finale are at an all-time high.
In previous seasons, Grey's Anatomy's 200th and 300th episodes uniquely concluded the installments while paying homage to past characters. The 200th episode, which aired during the 10th season, featured the doctors in full glam while working together to attend a fundraiser. The 300th episode, which aired in season 14, brought back some of Grey's Anatomy favorite characters.
So what can fans expect to see during the 400th episode? “No, we’re not doing a black-and-white movie musical,” Krista told the outlet. “But it’s going to be a pretty big event, I think.”
In case you're wondering how far away the 400th season is, it seems like it'll be a while before it airs. Before the pandemic, Grey's usually had about 24 episodes per season. But the last two years season 16 and season 17 have had 21 and 17 episodes, respectively. Assuming that Grey's will get back to its regular two dozen episode run, the February 24th airing is the ninth one of season 18. If we had to guess, the season 18 finale might air in the spring or summer.
As for what's happening this Thursday night, the Grey's Anatomy season 18 winter finale ended on a cliff-hanger leaving viewers to question what happened to Dr. Owen Hunt. The teaser for the upcoming episode left fans with many questions and excitement about the crossover with Station 19.
