After three seasons on Grey's Anatomy, actor Richard Flood is putting down his white coat and leaving the popular ABC medical drama.
Back in December, fans of the series were in complete shock during the midseason finale when Richard's character, Dr. Cormac Hayes, was in a car accident with Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). After a two month-long wait, Grey's viewers were relieved to see that all three doctors survived in the latest episode but the incident forced Cormac to reevaluate his time at Grey Sloan Memorial. Ultimately, he resigned.
Unsurprisingly, fans were shocked and disappointed to find out that even though Cormac was alive, his storyline has come to what seemed like an abrupt ending. Though the actor in real life didn't address his departure, many immediately flocked to his latest Instagram post to share their thoughts. In it, Richard posed with his stunt double Kevin Patrick Burke and he teased the return of Grey's to Thursday nights.
One person wrote in the comments section: "Please DO NOT leave!" Another added: "PLEASE tell me this was some early April Fools' prank and you aren’t leaving the show?!" A different fan said: "YOU ARE LEAVING WHAT!!!!!!! ??."
As viewers know, Cormac went to Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) before the episode ended and told her that he was giving her his notice. "I'm sorry," he said on the show. "My kids, they aren't thriving here. They aren't happy. We have to go ... back to Ireland." Despite Miranda trying to convince him to stay, Cormac said the decision was final and according to reports, he won't be changing his mind anytime soon.
Shortly after Cormac walked out of Miranda's office, Deadline broke that news that Richard was, in fact, leaving the show. The outlet reported that his last episode is on March 3rd. While we don't know how he'll be saying goodbye to his fellow doctors, we have a feeling it won't be an easy farewell for anyone involved, including Grey's fans.
When reflecting on Cormac's time at Grey Sloan Memorial, lots of viewers remembered him joining the medical team as a pediatric surgeon, widower and single father in season 16. However, in true Shondaland fashion, his arrival to the hospital in 2019 was more than just taking on a new job. Cormac was sent by Grey's Anatomy favorite Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) to be a potential love interest for Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). Even though the pair attempted to pursue a romantic connection, things fizzled out between them. Despite Cormac and Meredith's romantic connection never taking off, he remained a fan favorite throughout his time on the series.
As excited as we all are to see the rest of season 18, Richard's absence from the series will be felt.
