What is a Greek Frappe?
A Greek frappe is one of Greece's most popular coffee drinks. It's frothy and fluffy, which comes from shaking the coffee mixture.
This is one instance when you want to skip freshly ground coffee beans and use instant coffee instead. Instant coffee doesn't have the natural oils found in freshly roasted beans, which allows it to whip up into a dense foam quickly.
The key to a Greek frappe's signature foam lies in the shaking process—either in a cocktail shaker or a mason jar. A shake for about 30 seconds results in a long-lasting, smooth, caramel-like froth. A Greek frappe is typically finished with a splash of cold water and just a hint of milk, putting the bold coffee taste front and center.
If you want to sweeten your frappe, you have three options: glykós (sweet: 2 to 4 spoonfuls of sugar), métrios (medium: 1 to 2 spoonfuls of sugar) and skétos (plain/unsweetened).

Ready to teleport yourself to Athens or Mykonos? Here's how to make a Greek frappe at home.
1. Add 1-2 teaspoons of instant coffee into a shaker or a blender bottle. Add sugar to taste (see above for official levels of sweetness) and a small amount of cold water (about and 1/8 to 1/4 cup).
2. Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds to a minute until the coffee forms into a thick, frothy foam.
3. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes and pour in the frothy mixture. Top it off with a bit more cold water. If you like, add a splash of milk to taste.
4. Give it a quick stir to blend all the flavors together, and Mamma Mia — you have yourself a traditional Greek frappe.
What's the Difference Between Dalgona Coffee and a Greek Frappe?
All of this whipped coffee talk might make you think of another famous fluffy caffeinated drink: Dalgona coffee. Originally hailing from South Korea, Dalgona coffee became a viral sensation during the height of the pandemic thanks to its fluffy, cloud-like texture. Made by whisking equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and water to a velvety froth, it's typically served over ice with milk. It’s delicious and you can even make it ahead!
Although both Dalgona coffee and a Greek frappe are fluffy and made with instant coffee, the preparation and balance of ingredients are a bit different. Greek coffee tends to have less milk than Dalgona coffee, so it will be a bit more coffee-forward.
