Great Outfits in Fashion History: Debbie Allen at the 1982 Academy Awards
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
As impactful as the '80s fashion scene was, it's not every day you come across a dress from the era that you'd dub as ahead of its time — much less something you'd consider wearing today. This look served up by Debbie Allen, however, is a rare exception.
At the 1982 Academy Awards, Allen performed alongside the late Gregory Hines in an ultra-glamorous lilac gown. It boasted a high neckline, thigh-high side slit and waterfall-effect crystal bedazzlement, as well as strong shoulders — a quintessential '80s touch. Her glam was right on par with the decade's beauty trends: a bold red lip, smokey eye makeup, rosy blush and a high bun.
While emulating '80s fashion can easily become costume-y, taking style cues from moments like Allen's can be chic when done right. Below, see our favorite lilac picks to add a touch of '80s to your own wardrobe.
