How the Grammys Honored Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Following His Untimely Death
The 2022 Grammys paid tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins during Sunday night’s show. Taylor passed away on March 25 after allegedly suffering chest pains. He was only 50 years old.
Before beginning a larger In Memoriam segment, Trevor Noah took a moment to honor Taylor specifically:
“So this was the moment in the show when I was supposed to be introducing The Foo Fighters. We would have been celebrating with them as they won three Grammy Awards earlier today. But they are of course not here due to the tragic passing of their legendary drummer Taylor Hawkins. Our thoughts go out to Taylor’s family, his friends, the Foo Fighters family, and all of their friends around the globe. We would like to take a moment now to remember Taylor.”
Earlier in the evening, Billie Eilish gave a nod to Taylor herself by wearing a shirt with Taylor’s face on it during her performance of “Happier Than Ever”:
Before the show, CBS’s executive vice president of specials, music, and live events confirmed the Grammys would honor Taylor with a segment given that the drummer was initially slated to perform during the show with his bandmates prior to his death. “We will honor his memory in some way,” confirmed Jack Sussman. “We want to figure out what is the right thing to do that is respectful to everyone involved. We’re patient. We’ll be planning right up until the very end.”
Taylor’s bandmates Dave Grohl, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, Nate Mendel, and Rami Jaffee confirmed they would not be performing previously scheduled tour dates in order to properly grieve Taylor after his untimely passing.
“We’re sorry for and share in the disappointment that we won’t be seeing one another as planned. Instead, let’s take this time to grieve, to heal, to pull our loved ones close, and to appreciate all the music and memories we’ve made together,” they wrote.
Taylor died in Bogotá, Colombia, before a Foo Fighters performance at Festival Estéreo Picnic musical festival. People reports that an investigation into his death is ongoing after 10 substances were found in a preliminary urine toxicology test.
