Governor Andrew Cuomo Is Releasing a Book About the Pandemic, Titled American Crisis
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo became a leading national voice during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state, holding daily briefings with statistics about the virus's spread, and taking aim at the Trump administration's handling of the dire public health crisis. Now, he's parlaying all that into a new book.
Titled American Crisis, the book promises to explore Cuomo's experience with the state's coronavirus response, explaining why he made certain calls, and offering a "frank accounting" of those he worked with during that time. "In his own voice, Andrew Cuomo chronicles in American Crisis the ingenuity and sacrifice required of so many to fight the pandemic," per publishing imprint Crown, "sharing his personal reflections and the decision-making that shaped his policy, and offers his frank accounting and assessment of his interactions with the federal government and the White House, as well as other state and local political and health officials."
An excerpt shared with the Associated Press offers a small taste of the book. "The questions are what do you do with the fear and would you succumb to it," it reads. "I would not allow the fear to control me. The fear kept my adrenaline high and that was a positive. But I would not let the fear be a negative, and I would not spread it. Fear is a virus also."
After news broke about American Crisis, the backlash was swift. On Twitter, many pointed out that the pandemic is still very much ongoing—and that, especially early on, New York's management of the crisis was lacking. According to the New York Times's statistics, more than 32,000 people have died in the state of COVID-19.
American Crisis set to be released on October 13, just three short weeks before the presidential election in November.
