'Glitch Mommy' an exhibit by photographer Rita Koehler opens April 25 at Moreau Center
SOUTH BEND — The exhibit “Glitch Mommy: Forty Days and Forty Nights” opens April 25 and continues through June 1 at the Moreau Center for the Arts at Saint Mary’s College.
An artist’s lecture takes place at 3:30 p.m. April 25 in the Student Center, followed by a reception at 4:30 in the Moreau Center’s gallery.
A 1988 alumna of Saint Mary’s College, Rita Koehler, an American photographer and lens-based artist, situates herself in the debate of what constitutes an intelligible life — one that is speakable, has meaning and is valued.
The philosophy of her work is based on the premise that existence is relational and that to exist means to exist incommunion.
Koehler grew up in the late 1960s and early ’70s, the fifth of seven children, in a house built by her father overlooking the historic Santa Fe Trail and Blue River of Kansas City, Mo.
It was a time when societal freedoms were expanding, artistic expression was bringing in a new era, women’s liberation and civil rights marches were on the rise, and the reforms of Vatican II within the institutional Catholic Church were bringing to the modern laity a promise of renewal and inclusivity.
These and other modern-day environments of the latter half of the 20th century set the backdrop for Koehler’s early career pursuits and influence her current studio practice examining how economic, political and religious structures are used to control others in defense of misogyny, racism and bigotry.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and by appointment Fridays.
Admission is free.
