Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik’s Relationship Reportedly Was ‘Super Toxic’ Leading Up to Split
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid have split again after being on-off for six years, and new details have come out from People and Us Weekly sources about their dynamic being toxic leading up to the breakup. E! additionally got intel about how Gigi and Zayn are doing now in the days since the split and TMZ's report about an alleged dispute between Zayn and Gigi's mother Yolanda coming out. Zayn pled no contest to four charges of harassment against Gigi and Yolanda on Wednesday, ELLE can confirm from court documents it reviewed.
A source told Us that “it’s much better that they have separated. Gigi and Zayn had a very destructive relationship when they were together romantically. Gigi stands by Zayn’s ability to coparent well.”
People was told by a source close to Zayn that Gigi and him are “not fighting.” A friend of Malik told the outlet, “It was a super toxic relationship.”
A family friend close to Gigi, meanwhile, told People in contrast that Yolanda “has had some issues with Zayn” and believes “he could treat Gigi better.”
E! got intel on the former couple's present and future from multiple sources. A source told E! that Zayn and Gigi “are definitely split for good” and have been so “for weeks now.”
That source added that Gigi is “very distraught over the situation that happened,” and her family is upset, too.
A second source close to Gigi told the outlet that she and Zayn “decided they need this time for themselves. It's obviously hard because they are still fully co-parenting [their one-year-old daughter Khai] together. They have taken a pause but are very much still involved in each other's lives for the sake of their baby.”
Zayn and Gigi's breakup comes shortly after TMZ published allegations that Gigi's mom Yolanda claimed Zayn “struck” her. Zayn adamantly denied doing so in a statement to TMZ.
After pleading no contest to charges of harassment on Wednesday, Zayn was fined for the incident and is on probation for 360 days. In a statement Zayn published on Twitter the day before the court documents came out, Zayn explained why he pled no contest and his hopes for privacy for the sake of Khai:

“I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner's who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago,” he wrote. “This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press.”
Zayn will have to attend anger management classes and complete a domestic violence program and is not allowed to have contact with Yolanda or the security guard with her at the time of the alleged dispute, who Zayn, according to court documents TMZ reviewed, also harassed. Gigi and Zayn began dating in November 2015 and were on-off again until late 2019, when they rekindled their romance. Gigi became pregnant with Khai shortly after they got back together. She welcomed their daughter in September 2020.
A rep for Gigi told E! News shortly after news broke of Yolanda claiming Zayn “struck” her that the model “is solely focused on the best for Khai” and “asks for privacy during this time.”
