Gerard Piqué Slams Shakira and Her Fans Following Cheating Scandal

He might only be adding fuel to the fire.

Gerard Piqué is receiving more backlash from the public after new comments he gave about ex Shakira and her fans during a recent interview.

The former professional soccer player spoke with journalist Gerard Romero in an interview on April 1, and he didn't hold back when talking about the public response to his breakup.

When asked about the initial backlash to his alleged affair with model Clara Chia Marti and the split from Shakira, Piqué said, "In the beginning, it was bad and it reached a point where if I had let things get to me, I would have thrown myself off a cliff," in Spanish, based on a translation from Page Six.

The interview, which took place during a Twitch stream, was later uploaded on YouTube.

Piqué went on to specifically call out Shakira's fans: "For example, my ex is Latin American … you can’t imagine [the comments] I’ve gotten on social media from her fans. Millions of barbarities!"

"But I don’t care about any of it. Honestly, not at all—because I don’t know them. These people have no lives and why should I care? I’ll never meet them, they’re robots, you know?” continued Piqué.

The 36-year-old added, “They want you to worry and when you do, they would have won. You have to show them that you don’t care because it gets them angrier."

After the interview, many called out Piqué for what they saw as xenophobic comments concerning Latin Americans, in which he seemingly suggests that they're "barbarians" for harshly criticizing him.

One tweeted about the interview, "Did Gerard pique, a Spanish person, just insult Latin Americans because he’s hurt over some nasty comments from people online? Also, it’s not only Latin Americans who have been defending shakira, the rest of us have too. He’s just coming off as xenophobic."

Another response read, "pique openly saying xenophobic comments is wild."

Soon after the original interview was published, Shakira tweeted, "Orgullosa de ser Latinoamericana," which translates to "Proud to be Latin American," alongside the flags of Latin America.

Fans from all over joined the celebration in the comments. While Shakira didn't reference Piqué or his interview, most people believed that her tweet was done in direct response to her ex's comments.

Recently, Shakira also announced that she was moving from Barcelona to Miami, Florida, with her kids for a new start.
