George Clooney Calls Out Tabloids for 'Vilifying' Meghan Markle
George Clooney gave a forceful defense of his friend Meghan Markle this week. It's the first time someone close to Meghan has publicly called out the mistreatment she has received from the press particularly. Up until this point, Meghan's friends have defended her only anonymously.
Clooney was at a press event for Catch-22 when he told Australia's Who magazine that Meghan was being bullied in the way her late mother-in-law Princess Diana was. "I do want to say, they’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified," he started.
"She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and its history repeating itself. We’ve seen how that ends," he continued, referring to Diana's fatal car crash in 1997 that happened while she was being chased by paparazzi.
Clooney was particularly shocked by some tabloids' treatment of Meghan this weekend. "I can’t tell you how frustrating that is, just seeing them broadcast a letter from a daughter to a father, she’s getting a raw deal there and I think it’s irresponsible and I’m surprised by that," he said. Clooney is referring here to the Daily Mail publishing the personal letter Meghan sent to her father Thomas Markle because Thomas gave them the letter. Meghan's friends told People last week that the letter existed. Thomas had falsely claimed before Meghan hadn't spoken to him since the wedding.
"After the wedding she wrote him a letter," one of her friends told People. "She’s like, ‘Dad, I’m so heartbroken. I love you. I have one father. Please stop victimizing me through the media so we can repair our relationship.’ Because every time her team has to come to her and fact-check something [he has said], it’s an arrow to the heart. He writes her a really long letter in return, and he closes it by requesting a photo op with her. And she feels like, ‘That’s the opposite of what I’m saying. I’m telling you I don’t want to communicate through the media, and you’re asking me to communicate through the media. Did you hear anything I said?’ It’s almost like they’re ships passing.”
