Fourth of July travel tips and tricks

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Over 70 million people are predicted to travel 50 miles or more to celebrate the Fourth of July. This is a 5% increase in travelers from just last year.

Over 60 million of those people will be traveling by car, with some traveling more than 700 miles.

“I traveled from Port St. Lucie {Florida} and I came up here to see my father that I haven’t seen in, like, 5 years,” Darien Jenson told News 19. “But, I sold my home and bought a new motor home to go traveling with, so that’s what I’m doing right now.”

AAA estimates that 5.74 million will fly for their holiday travels which is a 6.8 increase from last year. And, that increase is showing itself with TSA screening over 11.3 million people just from Thursday to Sunday of last week.

AAA shares that the best day to leave for car travel was today with Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. being the worst time to travel for most. If you’re looking to make it home for work on Monday, leave after 2:30 p.m. on Saturday or before 2 p.m. on Sunday. See the photo above provided by INRIX to decide an optimal travel time for you.

AAA recommends checking your tires and oil in your car before leaving for any road trip, ensuring your car is ready for the journey, and there are no delays due to car issues.
