Fort Mill coffee shop tucked behind high school closes with hopes to find a new space
There were a lot of moving parts Thursday afternoon at Chatty Cathy’s Cafe as the coffee shop’s owners made the final steps for its closing.
Movers were taking boxes and furniture, as patrons looked around for items to purchase from the coffee shop that were no longer needed. Frozen waffles, dining tables — everything not sold was going into storage.
Chatty Cathy’s owner Cathy Meyers was in the middle of all of it, directing traffic.
“People are still walking in here and can’t believe I’m closed, still asking for coffee,” Meyers said. “They’re so used to coming in here, even though I was closed ... It’s like they can’t believe I’m not going to be here.”
The coffee house located behind Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill just off Heritage Lake served coffee, tea and smoothies to go along with freshly baked breakfast items such as sandwiches and muffins.
The cafe opened there on New Year’s Eve 2019 after over a year at the Heritage Conference Center in Fort Mill.
Meyers said she’s sad to be leaving the space but has loved serving the community.
“The kids loved all the stuff,” Meyers said through tears. “They loved the gummy bears and the Fudgsicles and the chocolate pumpkin muffins. Everyone loved their breakfast sandwiches and the coffee.”
“I’ve had parents come by and say thank you for watching my children. There’s a lot of people who came here who work from home, so I had a lot of people hanging out in here and working, and they loved the peaceful atmosphere.”
Meyers said that she is looking for a place to relocate near the Heritage Lake area within the next few months.
