Floht Haus: This $3.3 Million Getaway in British Columbia Is as Daring as Its Setting Is Dramatic
When faced with a difficult, ocean-facing site on British Columbia’s Bowen Island, situated in the middle of Howe Sound and part of the greater Vancouver metropolitan area, the innovative architecture and design firm STARK didn’t take the safe route with an audacious residence known as Floht Haus.
Anchored atop a rocky outcropping on a steep, .19-acre cliffside parcel that’s about two miles from the car ferry at Snug Cove, the modernist home’s two rectilinear volumes are clad in natural Ashlar slate and dark-stained cedar and stacked at a 90-degree angle, with the upper floor extending an astonishing 30-feet over the rugged cliff as it falls toward Eagle Cliff Road, which snakes along the island’s wooded shoreline.

Completed in 2023, the approximately 3,000-square-foot residence is now available to purchase for $3.288 million. Mary Lynn Machado of Macdonald Realty and Haneef Virani at Virani Real Estate Advisors hold the listing.
The upper floor comprises a long, linear great room with the kitchen and entrance at one end—the end that is firmly planted on the ground—and a dining area in the middle. In the section that juts out over the cliff is the living area, with a wall-to-wall bank of floor-to-ceiling glass positioned high enough to watch eagles and other avian wildlife soar by.
On either side of the kitchen, large, floor-to-ceiling panels of glass slide open and completely disappear into the wall, leading to a pair of glass-railed terraces for al fresco dining and lounging. There’s also a single-car garage and a powder room on this level.

Just at the bottom of the stairs on the lower level, there’s a small and windowless media lounge. Also housed downstairs are the home’s three light-filled bedrooms, along with a couple of bathrooms. Each bedroom has a wall of glass looking out over the water, and both bathrooms have an equally direct relationship with the natural surroundings; the showers are each set against a sheet of glass with unobstructed views, like showering outside while hovering above the trees.
A 20-minute ferry ride to Horseshoe Bay and just over an hour from downtown Vancouver, Bowen Island is prized for its pristine natural beauty and its peaceful, relaxed vibe. The island offers myriad outdoor recreational pursuits, unspoiled beaches, and a selection of unique shops, restaurants and galleries.
