First Nonbinary Cast Member Joins ‘SNL’
Welcome to 30 Rock, Molly!
Saturday Night Live has finally hired its first nonbinary cast member after 48 seasons on air.
Comedian Molly Kearney, who you may recognize as Fern Dannely in the Amazon Prime hit series A League of Their Own, will join the SNL crew when they return to Studio 8H at 30 Rock on Oct. 1.
Kearney, who uses they/them pronouns, shared the good news on Instagram on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 15, writing, "MEATBRICK MOVED TO NEW YORK !!!!" (a reference to their handle, @meatbrickmolly) alongside a graphic featuring their headshot framed by "Saturday Night Live" and "Season 48."
The actor's A League of Their Own co-stars were overjoyed to see the news.
"Yes yes yesssssssssssssssssss!!! 👏🙌❤️," Abbi Jacobson commented.
"Molllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️," wrote D'Arcy Carden.
"HOLY S--T DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!," Molly Ephraim added, followed by, "10 POUND BABY DESTINED FOR GREATNESS, BABY"
The program welcomed Kearney, alongside other newcomers Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, and Marcello Hernandez on their official Instagram account, with fellow cast members quickly welcoming the group.
Punkie Johnson left a few wholesome emojis: "🫡💪🏽❤️"
Kenan Thompson wrote, "Welcome Welcome!!!!!"
Heidi Gardner tripled up on the emojis, leaving, "❤️❤️❤️🙌🙌🙌😍😍😍," in the comments.
Chloe Fineman went even further with several fire claps: "🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏👏👏"
Ego Nwodim celebrated with a few party emojis: "🥳🥳🥳🥳"
The official NBC account offered a handful of waving emojis and Peacock TV wrote, "Welcome to the SNL fam! 👋," too.
The group likely replaces Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney, who announced that last season's finale was also their final episode. However, Aristotle Athari, Melissa Villaseñor and Alex Moffat departed earlier this month, meaning more new casting announcements may come in the next week or two leading up to the premiere.
