We Finally Know Who Dies on ‘Modern Family’

We finally have answers to the question that has been plaguing Hollywood: Who dies on Modern Family?

Well, last night’s episode gave us what we’re looking for: DeDe Pritchett (Shelley Long). She was not only the mother of Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Claire (Julie Bowen), but she was also the ex-wife of Jay (Ed O’Neill).

At the end of the episode, we learned DeDe died peacefully in her sleep after befriending a pack of wolves, battling a tribe of Inuits and getting swallowed by a whale. Since the character’s death doubled as the show’s Halloween episode, things skewed way more comedic than morbid. (We’re looking at you, Meghan Markle—er, we mean—Cam.)

Rumors about the death started back in September when Christopher Lloyd, co-creator of Modern Family, revealed that a “significant” character would be killed off in season ten. Although Ferguson previously confirmed that it’s a human—not an animal—we’re just glad it’s not Cam (Eric Stonestreet).

R.I.P., DeDe.
