Filling a dream: Retro Bakery opens brick-and-mortar shop in Saugatuck
SAUGATUCK — There are yet more sweet treats in Saugatuck, following the opening of Retro Bakery's brick-and-mortar location on Blue Star Highway.
The opening comes after months of work to transform the space at 3217 Blue Star Highway. The business itself launched about a year ago, when Eric Peterson of Fennville decided to leave mortgage banking behind.

“I’ve always baked,” Peterson told The Sentinel in August 2023. “My mother-in-law passed and she was the one who made all the Christmas cookies for that side of the family, so I decided I would try to recreate her recipes.”
As he created and learned, Peterson expanded his skills, venturing into biscotti, cupcakes and other baked goods. From his new location, he sells cakes, cupcakes, cookies, bread, cinnamon rolls and more.
Peterson puts an emphasis on baking from scratch, using recipes that date back to the 1950s. Although he operated from his kitchen at first, brick-and-mortar was the goal.
After finding the right location, he completed renovations to the building's plumbing and electrical, installed a kitchen and decorated. The business has a new entrance and a recently repaved parking lot.
Retro Bakery will be open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays.
