Get A Behind-the-Scenes Look At The Rock's New Show
Getting a call from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson telling you that you've been cast for his new athletic competition show is, understandably, a jarring experience. One competitor on NBC's The Titan Games (premiering January 3) hosted and overseen by Johnson screams into his phone when he gets the news in this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how the series came together.
Billing itself as the "ultimate athletic competition," Titan Games will pit 64 male and female contestants against each other in a mountain-like structure with some crazy-looking challenges based on Johnson's own workouts and physical achievements. The competitors are normal people who happen to be extremely fit, a requirement to make it through the rigorous setup. They include a metal polisher (the guy losing it when Johnson calls him), MMA fighters, personal trainers, an ICU nurse, and one hell of a dedicated 50-year-old grandmother.
"We really wanted everyday people," executive producer Arthur Smith previously told Men's Health."This is a platform for everyday people to become heroes. This is their payoff, their chance to show themselves."
Johnson has a warning for his cast, though. "These competitions, they're designed to fuck you up," he says during a pep talk. "Your adrenals are going to be shot by the end of the night. But if you're able to conquer them, it's going to be an amazing feeling."
In the below video that NBC provided to Men's Health, watch the competitors suit up, get to know each other, get to know The Rock and take on some terrifying activities. Those swinging beams look dangerous.
