An Exclusive First Look at Laura Carmichael as Maggie Pole in the Series Finale of 'The Spanish Princess'
Over the course of this season, fans of The Spanish Princess have watched as a friendship (or perhaps something more) has blossomed between Thomas More (played by Broadchurch's Andrew Buchan) and Maggie Pole (Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael). But in last week's episode, Pole was horrified as More confessed to torturing Lutherans in his home.
In this week's series finale, the pair will meet once again. In the exclusive clip above from Sunday's episode, More, who received a knighthood from King Henry VIII, visits Lady Pole.
"Sir Thomas? Is that how torturers are rewarded in this brave new England? You have been knighted?" she asks aggressively, as he approaches. Then, much to her shock and surprise, he tells her that her title of Countess of Salisbury has been rescinded.
"I am afraid for you, Lady Pole," More later says. "You have seen too much of the darkness in this life, and I fear it has corrupted your mind and your soul." To which Pole responds, "If you have nothing, then there is nothing to be afraid of. It is those who have everything that need be afraid."
Ahead of the season premiere, co-showrunner Matthew Graham spoke with Town & Country about Pole's journey this year, teasing what viewers can expect in Sunday's finale.
"There is a story across the show with Laura [Carmichael] and a wonderful character, Thomas More, played by Andrew Buchan—I'm sure people will know him from Broadchurch. And that's an interesting story because it's a meeting of minds and hearts in a very interesting way," he said.
"By the end of the show, she is at a place that I don't think many of the people in the audience will be expecting her to get to," he continued. "It's kind of exciting to take them there ... I'll say this. I didn't realize Laura could be quite so intimidating as Maggie Pole."
The Spanish Princess airs Sunday nights on Starz.
