Exclusive: Dylan Sprouse on Joining "After We Collided" and Why He Wanted to Play Trevor
Dylan Sprouse seems to be on the top of the world right now. Over the recent years, he has worn many different hats, some of which might surprise even his biggest fans. From opening his own meadery to creating his own comic book and even voicing a character in one of the most iconic video games series of all time, Kingdom Hearts, it's surprising to see that he had the time to return to the thing that made him a household name: acting.
While it's not his first role since his hiatus, where he graduated from NYU and started to follow his other interests, this is certainly his biggest one yet. As Trevor in After We Collided, he is ready to shake things up. Seventeen talked with Dylan on joining the cast, the fan reaction so far to the film overseas, and what's next for him in his career.
17: How was it seeing the fan reaction to your casting and joining such a beloved film series like After?
Dylan Sprouse: I should preface and say I actually didn't expect the reaction of the fan base. It's so large and I didn't know that going in. It was a pleasant surprise to know that people are so passionate. Joining the cast and crew was awesome, because I had actually met Hero [Fiennes Tiffin] previously on a trip to Italy during Fashion Week with my father and my brother. It was funny working with him, particularly because he knows my whole family now. Getting to meet Jo[sephine Langford] on set was just a super pleasant experience. All and all it was great because everyone had worked together already previously, even the cast and crew. So it was nice to kind of jump in the saddle and see that it was like a smooth sailing ship already.
17: What initially drew you to wanting to play Trevor?
DS: First and foremost, I thought the script was pretty well written. The characters seemed like a blast to play with a lot of quippy dialogue. [Director] Roger [Kumble], when he was doing his treatment of the script, we talked a little bit about that and how it kind of was inspired by some of his earlier works a little bit too, which I'm fond of. So I was excited to kind of jump in and do this.
17: You had the chance to see some fan reaction due to the film's international release. How has it been seeing how people are liking your character?
DS: It's been it's been nice. Obviously, because they're in different countries and in different languages, I haven't been able to translate fully their reactions. But it seems like people are warmly receiving the movie and that's I think that's the only real hope you have as an actor. All together, the pieces are going to come into play and people are going to enjoy the film. They really seem like they have I'm proud of After We Collided. I think it's a it's a really fun film. The story really hits home with a lot of people, so I'm excited to see what the US things. I hope people will be safe if they go to theaters and watch it.
17: Between the film, running your own meadery, your upcoming comic book, and also doing voice work, how has it been coming back to all these things after taking a brief hiatus during your college years.
DS: Sun Eater, the comic that I've been writing, just released the first issue this month. That's been kind of my primary focus in general and also during the kind of Coronavirus shut down. It's been something that's been really nice for me because I can do it from my laptop at home. I wake up to see the new comic book panels and that's been just wonderful. The coolest things is something like that which you've had in your mind for a while and seeing it come to life in that way. I'm looking forward to hearing more of people's reactions about all of that stuff.
I follow like the rule of cool with the stuff that I like. I've tried to take agency back into my own career. Coming back into the scene after college, I've just been doing things that I'm passionate about and following those threads to their end. So it leads me down a lot of kind of entrepreneurial interests. I feel very fulfilled and I have a lot of different things in the works in that regard. They're all different mediums and and it's really nice. I'm very distractible young lad, so I tried to distract myself with the things that I really love in that way. I've been blessed and thankful enough to be making kind of a career off of those decisions. And I hope that they all continue down the line.
