Exclusive: Bedsider Created an Extremely Easy Way to Help Women Find Abortion Providers
Bedsider, a birth control support network from Power to Decide, announced Wednesday morning the launch of a new feature that makes it extremely easy for people to locate nearby abortion providers, and access care they need.
You might know Bedsider as an online resource for all things birth control: The site has info on all the contraceptive methods you can feasibly get, including how effective each one is with typical and perfect use, and which method is best for who. For a few years, part of Bedsider's mission in making contraceptive knowledge and access as easy as possible has included a local clinic finder.
And now, according to a press release sent exclusively to Cosmopolitan.com ahead of the announcement, Bedsider will add another vital component to its clinic finder-information on which nearby offices also offer abortions.
The new feature allows you to search for health centers in your area that offer abortion services. Search results will list services offered-like whether a clinic can insert IUDs-and describe features of each clinic-does this location have extended hours, do they take health insurance, et cetera. Bedsider will also include a link to each clinic's website, as well as Yelp reviews and directions on Google Maps. As Ginny Ehrlich, CEO of Power to Decide, tells Cosmopolitan.com, more than 16,000 clinics are included in Bedsider's database.
The addition of an abortion provider finder is a natural extension of what Bedsider has always done in offering comprehensive, regularly updated information on contraception, and ultimately, the agency to decide when and if you become pregnant. The tool is especially helpful as people seeking abortion care face the ongoing threat of crisis pregnancy centers, or faux-abortion clinics that will do anything to talk women out of abortions, and making their own decisions about their bodies.
"Bedsider has always been, and will continue to be, a birth control support network," Ehrlich says. "For us, it’s all about trust. We trust women to make the choices that are right for them, and we see our role as providing them with the information, support, and tools they need to do so. The bottom line is that we are committed to ensuring that all people have access to the full spectrum of reproductive health services."
