Everything We Know About Disney's Mulan
In recent years Disney has turned some of its best animated films into live-action masterpieces, including Beauty and the Beast (2017), Cinderella (2015), and Maleficent (2014).
Next on the list to receive the live-action treatment is the beloved story Mulan, which debuted as an animated film in 1998. The movie became an instant classic and features some of Disney's most memorable music (although it's possible that this version won't include our favorite songs). Below, everything we know about this upcoming Disney "epic."
Who will play Mulan?
Disney announced its casting decision in November 2o17, after an extensive search. Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who also goes by Crystal Liu, will play the movie's heroine. She is well known for her work in China, and previously worked on The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) and Outcast (2014).
Who else is in the cast?
As of April 2018, the only other cast member that has been announced is Chinese actor Donnie Yen, previously of Disney's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). He will play Commander Tung, who is Mulan's mentor, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
We are still waiting for news about who will play Chen Honghui, who is said to have replaced the role of Captain Li Shang from the animated film. His character is described as Mulan's rival who later becomes a potential love interest.
Who is the Director?
The film is being directed by Niki Caro, who recently directed The Zookeeper's Wife starring Jessica Chastain.
"It's a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving," she told MovieFone of her vision for the new film.
Will it be a musical?
Much to the sadness of fans, it was originally reported that the live-action movie will not be a musical. However, Caro later corrected that statement, telling The Hollywood Reporter in April of last year, "We're still exploring the role that music's going to play in it, but for sure there will be music."
When will the movie come out?
The current release date is March 27, 2020, Variety reports. The movie was pushed back after originally having been reported to debut later this year.
