Everything hikers and outdoor enthusiasts need to beat the heat
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — There are plenty of hiking trails in the Roanoke area for people to explore. However, these high temperatures make it difficult to enjoy them.
The combination of high temperatures and heavy gear can cause people to dehydrate quickly, which could pose an issue for someone deep into a trail.
“It’s a challenge for us,” said Brian Clingenpeel, the community outreach coordinator for Roanoke Fire and Rescue. “Then if we have to carry somebody back down, that is very manpower intensive, so it can take us 20 or more people to carry one person off the trail.”

According to Clingenpeel, dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, and muscle cramps, and if left unchecked, it can lead to heat exhaustion and ultimately heat stroke.
Therefore, it is critical for hikers to pack plenty of water and to hydrate.
“You really need to start hydrating for your hike way before you even go on the hike,” Clingenpeel said. “Make sure you are hydrating before, and then make sure you bring along enough water while you’re on the hike.”

Along with drinking water, it is encouraged to bring plenty of snacks, dress in light clothing, wear a hat to block the sun, and avoid hiking during the hottest time of the day.
“Always be prepared,” Andrea Futrell, the co-owner of Daleville’s Outdoor Trails store. ” Make sure you take everything you need, know where you’re going, let somebody else know where you’re going to be, and have a backup plan.”
Other useful tips include not hiking alone, keeping your phone charged in case of an emergency, and don’t forget your map.
