Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history, will be laid to rest today.
Mourners from across the world have flocked to London to witness the state funeral of the late queen, who died at 96 years old earlier this month. The funeral is being held at Westminster Abbey in London. Following the service, the queen will be buried at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where Prince Philip was buried following his death last year.
King Charles III previously reflected on the life and legacy of his late mother in a statement released by Buckingham Palace soon after the announcement of her passing.
"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," the king said. "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms, and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."
He added, "During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."
In addition to members of the royal family—including Prince William and Kate, the new Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie—dignitaries from all over the globe are also attending the service.
