Etsy Has Spoken: Here Are the Only Decor Trends That Matter in 2019
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."
It's that time of year when Etsy releases its popular Trend Guide, including a focus on home decor, and as to be expected, there's a ton to love. The results are compiled from Etsy search data as well as findings across the design landscape. Plus, the beloved ecommerce site spent a great deal of time analyzing themes among retailers' product offerings, taking a close look at the types of items shoppers are resonating with most. Now that the results are in, Etsy is proclaiming 2019 as the year of maximalism—think statement home decor accents, bold patterns, and vibrant hues.
ED checked in with Etsy Trend Expert Dayna Isom Johnson, who currently stars on NBC’s “Making It,” for insights on the top decorating trends. "As we embrace our own busy realities in 2019, maximalism speaks to the very real phenomenon of having lots of stuff in our homes," Isom Johnson says. "Not to be confused with clutter, the over-the-top trend is all about piling on color, textures, and shapes in a sophisticated, yet fun way. Let’s face the facts: sometimes everything we own brings us joy–and that’s totally fine."
With that said, scroll down for a look at Isom Johnson's take on what's worth keeping on your radar as you refresh your home for the season.
Tie Dye
Shop Now
Phoenix Hand Dyed Bedding, $148 - $168
Yes, the '70s trend is making a comeback in the decorating world. With more than 267k Etsy searches over the past three months, the pattern is showing up on a range of items, from bedding to mirrors. This year, look out for a more sophisticated take on the '70s trend with a lighter palette of pastels. Need even more proof of tie dye's staying power? Etsy found that there were more than 1.7 million searches for "70s" alone.
Glam Deco Styles
Velvet Knot Stool, $390
"Mid-century modern designs have become a symbol of minimalism, so now, we’re embracing glam deco styles that incorporate the staples of maximalism," Isom Johnson says. You can spot the trend in striking lighting, lush fabrics, and even
mix-and-match metallics.
Wallpaper in Unexpected Places
Classic White Marble Tiles, $266
Any designer would agree that wallpaper can transform a room in an instant, but Etsy wants you to think outside the box this year. According to Isom Johnson, contrary to its name, wallpaper shouldn't just be reserved for walls. "We’re seeing this design staple being used in the most unexpected ways–we’re talking adding pops of color or patterns to staircases, dressers, and cabinets."
Etsy noticed that, over the past three months, searches for “peel stick wallpaper” increased by 385% (compared to the same timeframe last year). Etsy shoppers were also curious about floor decals and stair decals (there were 15,000 and 19,000 searches, respectively). There's also interest in ”stick tiles,” which confirms that removable wallpaper is an ideal way of injecting personality into a space with pattern or color without a major commitment—or mess.
Cut-out Shapes
Abstract Wall Art, $16
Etsy found that terrazzo is taking a back seat this year. What's in its place? Cut-out shapes, as confirmed by the more than 127,000 searches Etsy noticed for “abstract prints” over the past three months. "This puzzle-like print incorporates both geometric and abstract elements, bringing the ultimate combination of maximalism and modernism to any space," Isom Johnson says.
Animal Kingdom
The Tigers Print, $38
Real-life animals have made their way into the decor space as well. Animals like tigers, flamingos, and parrots are having a moment and can be seen in decor accents ranging from wall art to throw pillows. Classic animal prints are also still in the mix, with Etsy confirming that there were 280k searches for the term over the past three months.
Desert-Inspired Decor
Custom Dinner Plates, Starting from $95
More than 4 million searches for “turquoise,” 138k searches for “desert,” and 83k searches for “sunset” on Etsy over the last three months, confirm that desert-inspired decor is worthy of attention. Look out for earth tones, natural textiles, and an abundance of vibrant turquoise hues.
Crystal-inspired Details
Lucite Angled Robe Towel Hook, $74
If you're all about self-care, you'll be delighted with another trend Etsy pinpointed: crystal-inspired decor. There were a total of 63k searches for “crystals” in the past three months. On Etsy, you can find everything from crystal-inspired dresser knobs to serving utensils. "These eye-catching pieces turn your home into a wellness haven, and serve as a subtle reminder to slow down, take a deep breath, and focus on mindfulness," Isom Johnson says.
