ENMU art camp to start this week
Jun. 1—For the third year, Eastern New Mexico University will host another Summer by Design art camp on Monday through Thursday.
The camp is for elementary, middle and high school students. There is no limit to the number of students who attend the camp; organizers say that historically, 40-50 students participate.
"We started this camp as an opportunity to support our regional students, so they are able to explore their visually creative side," Richard Schwartz, chair for the Department of Art at ENMU said.
Schwartz said there is an elementary area, and they'll work on a variety of 2-D and 3-D projects with a certified art teacher. Students can look forward to watercolor painting, sculpture projects, design projects, bead bracelet construction and more.
The middle school group will most likely be instructed by an advanced university art student. This group can look forward to fine oil painting, charcoal drawing, further honing their 2-D skills with still life models, and other projects.
The high school group has the opportunity to stay in the university residence halls to "experience what being a university student is like," according to Schwartz. These students will work on drawing and special printing projects in the morning, while they have the opportunity to choose what they would like to focus on in the afternoon.
Schwartz said this year the choices include graphic design projects, oil painting, photography, sculpture, and chain mail.
— The Summer by Design Day Camp option includes lunch, art materials, instruction, and a t-shirt for $175.
— The Summer by Design Residence Hall option (for high school students only) includes a four-night stay (Sunday through Wednesday evenings) in a residence hall, breakfast, lunch, dinner, art materials, instruction, and a t-shirt for $300.
"The majority of our success stories include our students that have essentially "come out of their shell" by connecting with their peers with similar interests," Schwartz said.
