Elizabeth Warren Proposed To Her Husband, Bruce Mann, Because Of Course She Did
This year’s virtual Democratic National Convention has been a who’s who of the Democratic party. Michelle Obama, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bill Clinton, and more have already spoken. And, on day three of the event, Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren is scheduled to speak.
Elizabeth ended her own campaign for president in March and endorsed Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Since then, she's stayed active on a whole bunch of political issues, but it’s totally understandable that you might have some q's about her, including who her husband is.
Bruce Mann was more of a quiet supporter of his wife during her presidential candidate campaign, but he did do an interview with CNN in 2019 where he said that the couple’s relationship "just works." Here’s what you need to know about Elizabeth’s husband of 39 years.
Bruce is a Harvard Law professor.
Like his wife, he's had an impressive career. He’s taught as a visiting or permanent member of the faculty at the law schools of Washington University in St. Louis and the universities of Connecticut, Houston, Texas, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and in the history department at Princeton, according to his official Harvard bio. At Harvard Law School, he specializes in non-profit and charitable organizations, American legal history, and trusts and estates.
He’s an author.
Bruce has written several books on law, including the very niche Neighbors and Strangers: Law and Community in Early Connecticut, a co-edited volume of essays called The Many Legalities of Early America, and Republic of Debtors: Bankruptcy in the Age of American Independence.
He’s a father figure to Elizabeth's children.
Bruce is known as "Dad" to Warren’s two children from her previous marriage—daughter Amelia and son Alex, according to the Boston Globe. The couple also has a golden retriever named Bailey.
Bruce met his future wife at a law conference.
The couple first crossed paths at a conference in Florida, he told the Boston Globe, and his description of seeing his future wife for the first time is pretty sweet. "I saw this woman talking to someone, and I was just captivated," he said. "I just walked right over. She barely noticed me. It took a couple of days."
He’s more of a private guy.
Bruce told Mass Live in 2012 that he didn’t expect to be known to the public as "Elizabeth Warren’s husband." "Oh, God no. Never. We have each had academic careers for roughly 35 years. This is not something we ever aimed for, ever thought about, ever expected," he said.
Bruce is cool with being Mr. Elizabeth Warren.
"I’m usually introduced as Elizabeth’s husband, which has been fine with me," he said during a 2012 speech in support of his wife, per Mass Live.
Watch Elizabeth and Bruce be cute together:
He does really sweet things.
Elizabeth regularly refers to Bruce on Instagram as "sweetie" and even once gushed about how he organized their hall closet as an early anniversary present. "I’m a very lucky woman," Elizabeth wrote.
Elizabeth proposed to Bruce.
She slipped that little nugget in with her Insta post about Bruce’s closet-organizing skills. "Back when I proposed to Bruce, I knew he was pretty special," she said. "But through decades of ups and downs – kids, dogs, moves, living in separate cities, deaths in the family, and on and on – he’s turned out to be even more special than I originally thought."
