The New Eight Sleep Smart Bed Is Going To Change The Lives of Hot Sleepers Everywhere
With conversations around self-care and smart home technology both at an all-time high, it comes as no surprise that brands are putting a focus on products that will improve your sleep. We've now got alarm clocks that gently wake you up by gradually lighting up your room, and weighted blankets made with cool-to-the-touch materials that promise to keep you from sweating all night long. Though after learning about Eight Sleep's newest smart bed, I'm not sure any other products compare.
What is it?
The Eight Sleep Pod is a mattress like no other. To put it simply, you can set the temperature of the bed to be as cool or as warm as you want. As if that weren't amazing enough, the bed has two sides that are controlled individually, so you and your partner don't need to agree on what temperature to keep the bed at. Besides the obvious reasons, this is a huge deal because according to research, sleeping in a cooler environment (say, 65-ish degrees, not 30) allows you to sleep deeper, for a longer period of time without interruption. Basically, a cool bed = the best sleep of your life.
How does it work?
The Pod comes with four key components, the Active Grid technology, the foam bed, the Hub, and the Eight Sleep app, that all connect to create an optimal sleep experience. It all starts with the Active Grid technology, which is what you'd consider a mattress cover, only so much better. When you touch the top of the mattress you literally feel a grid pattern under the material. This is a series of small pipes that pushes water through the mattress all night long. Unlike a standard foam mattress, which absorbs heat like a sponge and holds onto it throughout the night, the water running through the Pod absorbs your body heat and pulls it away, pushing it out of the mattress and back to the Hub, a small water tank attached to the bed by a hose.
The Hub connects to Wi-Fi, so you can control it through the Eight Sleep app. Besides turning the Hub on and off, the app allows you to set the temperature of the Pod anywhere between 55 to 115° F. You can set the temperature manually, or use the app's smart temperature mode which adjusts the temperature throughout the night based on what your body needs. And how does the app know what your body needs? A sensor network built into the Active Grid technology tracks your sleep, collecting data on everything from your body temp to your heart rate each night. Beyond that, the app also tracks other sleep stats, like how long you are in REM, and even what time you wake up. The company promises that after just 30 days of tracking all of these sleep variables and using the app's "sleep coach," you'll be able to optimize your sleep every night so that you wake up feeling refreshed and energized every morning, even if you didn't get a full eight hours of sleep.
How can I get one?
The Pod is available for pre-order on the Eight Sleep website and will ship in April 2019. It's available in four sizes (Full, Queen, King, and Cali King) and starts at just $1,995. At a price like that, it's pretty much a no brainer for hot sleepers.
