8 Three-Piece Outfit Formulas to Put on Rotation This Fall
We love an outfit formula. All you need is a few (in this case, three) pieces to create a stylish look without any extra effort. Here are eight easy-to-copy formulas that will save you time and energy this season.

Mom Jeans + Turtleneck + Jean Jacket
Canadian tuxedo, but make it fancy. Denim on denim is one of our go-tos, and we’re especially into this slightly dressed-up version. The turtleneck and pointy-toe shoes add a bit of polish, but you could certainly swap in different shoes for a more casual look.
Get the look: Gap jeans ($70); Old Navy turtleneck ($30); Levi's jacket ($98)
Sweater + Midi Skirt + High Boots
Regardless of prints and colors, this is a classic combination that’s super easy to execute. Just be sure to tuck in the sweater—an untucked top in this scenario can veer into sloppy territory.
Get the look: Ann Taylor sweater ($70); Halogen x Atlantic-Pacific skirt ($99); Calvin Klein boots ($229)
Trench Coat + Cropped Pants + Ballet Flats
A little Audrey Hepburn, a little French-girl chic, this ensemble is effortless, elegant and comfortable.
Get the look: Babaton coat ($245); Everlane pants ($50); Sam Edelman flats ($100)
Jeans + T-Shirt + Blazer
Not much to say here except that jeans, a simple tee and a blazer works in about a million different situations, and is basic enough that you can rewear it (with slight tweaks) pretty much all the time.
Get the look: Wrangler jeans ($118); BP. T-shirt ($17); J.Crew blazer ($198)
Button-Down + Culottes + Blazer
Borrowed from the boys in the best way possible. An artfully rumpled French tuck keeps things cool (and not at all “schoolboy”). Shoe-wise, we’re partial to a cool white sneaker, but this would also look lovely (and fancier) with a pair of black pumps.
Get the look: Treasure & Bond button-down ($69); Michael Stars culottes ($228); Vince Camuto blazer ($89)
Button-Down + Skirt + Bomber Jacket
Cute, right? Two things to note about this skirt. First, since it’s on the shorter side, we recommend sticking with flat shoes. Second, as it gets colder, you can (and should) wear it with a pair of opaque tights.
Get the look: Banana Republic button-down ($78); Halogen skirt ($79); Obey jacket ($119)

Printed Dress + Belt + Combat Boots
You want to wear a dress but you don’t want to look twee. Here’s how: Choose an edgier print like red plaid, add a black leather belt (which, as an added bonus, cinches your waist) and top everything off with a pair of tough leather ankle boots.
Get the look: BB Dakota dress ($88); Gucci belt ($450); Dr. Martens boots ($125)
White Jeans + Oversize Coat + Mules
Think white jeans season is over? Think again. Transition this summer staple to fall by pairing it with pieces in darker colors and heavier materials (like a gorgeous navy wool coat). Everyone will be too busy commenting on how chic you look to realize how long ago Labor Day was.
Get the look: J Brand jeans ($198); Zara coat ($100); Vince mules ($325)
