Education Matters: CTEC High School’s robotics team gives back in a unique way
FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE) – Students who attend Fresno County’s CTEC High School are required to participate in community service and members of the school’s robotics team are giving back in a unique way.
CTEC High School’s robotics team is relatively new, the Titans have been competing for only three years.
“We’ve known each other more since we’ve been with each other for three years. we had better communication I think and worked together better,” said Ainsley Plumb a student at CTEC High School.
They compete through a program called First Robotics. The program encourages community outreach and giving back to future generations, which is the focus of the school’s first-ever Robo-summer camp.
“We wanted to connect with a group of younger students, younger generations that’s interested in science and technology, and have this camp, an ability to show them what we do and get them interested and hungry to do it,” said Brian Emerson an instructor at CTEC High School.
Camper Saesha Pradeep wants to be an engineer, she was excited about what this camp offered.
“I really am excited about like being able to make things and also like robots,” Pradeep said.
The camp was designed for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. The students were taught the basics of 3-D printing, coding, laser cutting, and electronics, all in a hands-on way.
“I really like the feel of just getting stuff done. After doing a lot of work and seeing it actually work,” said David Krueger, a CTEC High School student.
Krueger will get to see it work, at the end of camp students will take home a wireless, controlled programmed robot that they can drive around.
“The whole point of the camp is not just to have a fun time and have a cool thing to take home but how is it made, how does it work, how do you modify it if you want to build your own,” Emerson said.
The young students weren’t the only ones learning, the week-long camp was organized and run by members of CTEC High School’s robotics team.
“I joined the outreach and business team and this is the stuff they do and planning this whole thing made me see this is probably where I’m best fit on the team,” Plumb said.
Plumb said robo camp was a good way to increase outreach to the community and let more students know about CTEC.
“When I first came here I was amazed by how much I could do here. I really want to go to this place when I get to the age where I can come here,” Pradeep said.
