How to Eat at All the BBQ Restaurants from Chef's Table BBQ
Cue the recomposed Vivaldi and the time-lapsed kitchen footage, Netflix’s Chef Table is back for another volume of Food You’re Definitely Not Good Enough to Make at Home; it’s a food show at its frustrating finest.
The original Chef’s Table is currently on its seventh season (to be aired hopefully later this year). Chef’s Table BBQ, much like Chef’s Table France, acts as a standalone series, but with the same producer, the same streaming network, and the same structure and directorial style—proving a meal by any other name smells just as delicious.
With BBQ, Chef’s Table is stripping meat from bone, taking us outside carpeted, Michelin-starred dining rooms and instead shoving us on line at 6AM as we await some good old backyard brisket and beer. It’s a celebration of one station—the grill—and the chefs there sweating it out: the pitmasters. It ain’t about some fancy secret rub; it’s about the pitmaster.
Featured chefs/pitmasters this season include some contemporary BBQ legends like Tootsie Tomanetz and Rodney Scott. We also get the chance to travel to Mexico and Australia (because, thankfully, America isn’t the only place where barbecue is king), with Lennox Hastie and Rosalia Chay Chuc.
After watching meat get grilled and smoked for 4 hours, you probably want to actually sit at these chefs’ tables. And while COVID-19 makes visiting some of these restaurants more difficult, there are still ways to get some delivery BBQ—and support these establishments at the same time.
Here’s every restaurant featured in Chef’s Table BBQ.
Episode 1
Snow's BBQ (Lexington, Texas USA)
Chef Tootsie Tomanetz, 85, is an American barbecue legend and pitmaster at Snow's BBQ in Texas. Normally, you'd have to get to Snow's pretty early in the morning to pick up its famous brisket or ribs; the restaurant is open Saturdays from 8:00 AM "'till sold out!" These days, Snow's is closed. Thankfully, you can order Snow's famous beef brisket and ribs online here—and get it shipped! Help support the Texas staple.
Episode 2
Firedoor (Sydney, Australia)
The good news is that Firedoor, helmed by Chef Lennox Hastie, is open for business. The bad news is that you'll have to travel all the way to Sydney, Australia. The good news is that Sydney, Australia, is an awesome place to visit. The bad news is that eating at Firedoor will probably cost you $150 per plate. The good news is that it's totally worth it. So make a reservation, here.
Episode 3
Rodney Scott's BBQ (Charleston, South Carolina USA)
Chef Rodney Scott is the newest pitmaster king of South Carolina. He opened Whole Hog BBQ back in 2017 and now has another location in Birmingham (and soon Atlanta). Whole Hog BBQ is currently open for business. Order here.
Episode 4
Untitled (Yaxunah, Mexico)
You might remember Chef Rosalia Chay Chuc from Netflix's other popular food series, Ugly Delicious. She's located in Yucatan, Mexico, and since you won't be able to make reservations, learn as much as you can watching her make the pork dish cochinita pibil.
