Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Will Star in New A24 Film
It has been revealed that Dwayne Johnson will star as legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine.
Written by Benny Safdie, the film will be produced and financed by indie studio A24, who are behind some of the most beloved films of the last decade, including Everything Everywhere All At Once, Lady Bird and 20th Century Women.
The Smashing Machine will be Safdie's first time directing solo, usually partnering with brother Josh Safdie. His previous films include the multi-award-winning Uncut Gems and Good Time.
Following the former wrestler and mixed martial artist, the film takes place in the year 2000, focusing on Kerr's struggle with addiction, winning, love and friendship.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been helming big-budget box office movies for years, but this will be his first time diving into a dramatic role.
A24 exec Noah Sacco said, "Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark's inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life".
Johnson and Safdie will also produce alongside Dany Garcia, Eli Bush and David Koplan.
