Dune Part 2 Director Calls it Quits After Next Film
Three Dune films is enough for Denis Villeneuve.
The director of 2021’s Dune and upcoming 2024 sequel Dune: Part Two has said the next film in the trilogy, Dune Messiah, will be his last.
“Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me,” Villeneuve tells Time.
It follows comments he made in December 2023 during a press conference in South Korea. “I don’t know exactly when I will go back to Arrakis,” he said. “I might make a detour before just to go away from the sun. For my mental sanity, I might do something in between.”
Warner Bros.
That’s not to say Dune’s third film marks the end of the road for the franchise - just that another director will take over the reins.
That’s if Dune Messiah is even greenlit. Warner Bros. is waiting to see how Dune: Part Two does before confirming a follow-up, but with Dune earning $402 million on a $165 million budget, it’s expected to be a hit.
Where Villeneuve’s first two Dune films adapt author Frank Herbet’s original 1965 sci-fi novel, Dune Messiah adapts the second. That means there are plenty more books to bring to the screen.
Dune: Part Two releases in theaters on March 1st. But on the topic of the Dune Part Two runtime: how long is the Dune sequel?
