Doctor Foster creator discusses third series after 7.2 million watch finale
The British viewing public are still reeling from the tumultuous events of the finale of the second series of Doctor Foster, which aired on BBC One on Tuesday night to an audience of 7.2 million viewers. But plans are already afoot for a third series, according to the show's creator Mike Bartlett.
Speaking to The Telegraph, the playwright and screenwriter said: “I need to talk things through with Suranne (Jones). There is potential for another series, but a lot of pieces have to be put in place.”
He also suggested that the cast and crew had perhaps reached exhaustion with the show, which has kept viewers hooked with the increasingly grisly unravelling of the relationship between Gemma (Jones) and her ex-husband Simon (Bertie Carvel): “None of us need to do any more.”
Speaking to ITV's Lorraine, Bartlett repeated his point, adding: “That final moment of last night's episode obviously opens the door for more ideas to follow... Watch this space.”
The BBC are yet to commission a third series of the psycho-thriller, which first aired in 2015. However, the channel's official Twitter account appeared to suggest that Doctor Foster had left our screens for good on Tuesday night:

Reaction to the series' confusing finale has been divided on Twitter, with viewers both calling for and dismissing the prospect of another instalment.

Worst ending to a series probably ever. BBC execs should be taking pay cut this year for wasting a brilliant series #DoctorFoster

I'd still watch a 3rd series. I'd like to see if those two would behave like adults while looking for their son. #DoctorFoster@BBCOne

Disappointed with the #DoctorFoster finale and the whole series in general. PLEASE don’t do a series 3.
