Did Rihanna Wear a Victorian Nightgown to 'Vogue' Paris’ 95th Anniversary Party?
What to wear to the biggest party of Paris Fashion Week? A glitzy body-con dress was the safest bet for Vogue Paris’ 95th anniversary bash. Models like Angela Lindvall, Laetitia Casta, Liya Kebede, Natasha Poly and Lily Donaldson flowed into the sprawling Hôtel Particulier and its vast salons of sparkling crystal chandeliers, marble floors and white moldings in the city’s Golden Triangle, stopping to strike a pose against the its black façade dotted with 95 electric candles.
Leave it to Dior muse Rihanna to throw a curveball, parting the sea of partygoers in Victorian looking Dior couture dress, looking like a virginal goddess in white-cotton. Perched on a sofa, she delicately nibbed on breadsticks and truffle dip as cigarette-puffing revelers craned to get a better glimpse. Upon closer inspection, RiRi’s very sheer gown wasn’t so innocent. “Happy birthday Vogue Paris! It’s such a prestigious title, I’m so proud to be here,” she told Yahoo Style of the occasion.
Back downstairs, a forest of smartphones filled the air as legendary New York dance troupe House of Ninja performed to Madonna’s “Vogue” for a designer-filled crowd, including Christopher Kane, Mary Katrantzou and Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and (a newly blond) Maria Grazia Chiuri.
So where do all these Vogue Paris-ians see themselves at 95? “Killing it and having a hot boyfriend!” yelled current cover co-star Kendall Jenner, who wore a black and white Ulyana Sergeenko gown. Her faithful momager, Kris Jenner, was less ambitious, offering with a weary giggle “Hopefully standing up.”
“On a beach somewhere with purple hair,” said Zoë Kravitz, slinking by in the same Balenciaga dress that she wore on the runway on Friday night. Angela Lindvall and Lindsey Wixson tapped into their hippie instincts, seeing themselves “in the woods, writing and growing plants” and “in a rocking chair, meditating” respectively, while Coco Rocha unleashed her inner eccentric: “I’m gonna wear the craziest outfits; I want a pet leopard and a red carpet that will roll out in front of me with a gorgeous diamond cane.”
The night was not without drama, a glass table in one salon crashed to the ground, dagger-like shards landing mere centimeters from well-heeled feet, including those of Joséphine de La Baume, the Parisian wife of Mark Ronson, who continued puffing on her cigarette without batting a fake eyelash. “Oh my god – is Rihanna OK?” gasped Alexa Chung in mock horror.
Even Mario Testino, who shot Gisele Bundchen for one of the magazine’s four anniversary covers, got in on the fortune-telling. “I will be in my house in Peru, still shooting for Vogue but also looking very closely at my art foundation, Matte.” Testino called this one his favorite Vogue shoot. “Gisele kind of freaked out when I said to her, ‘No make-up, just come on set,’ she was like, ‘But I have to do something’ and I said ‘No, nothing. And I started my day like that. Without any make-up, no hair, nothing – just as she came. But she’s got it…”
The crowd burned up the dance floor, lip synching to classics like ‘Let’s Dance’ and ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, while Oscar-winning Thirty Seconds to Mars rocker Jared Leto lurked in the shadows beneath a shock of pink hair. So where will he be at 95? “Dead,” he snarled, wolfishly scanning the dance floor for prey. Watch out Rihanna.
