‘Dharma and Greg’: Where Are They Now

In the landscape of 90s television, Dharma and Greg shone as a beacon of comedy and romance, capturing the hearts of audiences with its quirky premise and lovable characters. Created by Chuck Lorre and Dottie Dartland Zicklin, this sitcom aired from 1997 to 2002, spanning five seasons of laughter and heartwarming moments. The show's popularity stemmed from its refreshing take on love and relationships, coupled with the delightful chemistry of its talented ensemble cast.

The show was about Dharma, a free-spirited yoga instructor who finds true love in a conservative lawyer, Greg. Though they are polar opposites, he fulfills her need for stability and she fulfills his need of optimism.

Jenna Elfman as Dharma Finkelstein Montgomery

Born September 30, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, Jenna Elfman plays the role of Dharma Finkelstein Montgomery, an easy-going head-in-the-clouds yoga instructor.

Elfman started taking classical ballet at the age of five and started her professional career as a dancer. She appeared in several music videos including those by the bands Depeche Mode and Anthrax. She even danced in the 1991 Academy Awards show, choreographed by Debbie Allen.

She ultimately transitioned to acting, best known for her role as Dharma in the hit series Dharma and Greg, for which she garnered a Golden Globe Award, three Emmy Award nominations and two TV Guide Awards.

After Dharma, Elfman went on to have regular roles in many TV series including playing the character Lizzie in the series Brothers & Sisters (2006). Ironically, Susan Sullivan, who played the mother-in-law of her character, Dharma, in Dharma and Greg, played the role of her mother in Brothers & Sisters.

Elfman was also a series regular in award-winning drama Damages (2012), 1600 Penn (2012-13) Growing up Fisher (2014) and she played Alice on ABC's comedy series Imaginary Mary (2017.

In addition to TV, she also appeared in several movies including Friends with Benefits (2011)—she was so committed to the film that she started rehearsals four months after giving birth.

Most recently, Elfman has had a regular role as June Dorie on Fear the Walking Dead (2018-23)

She’s married to the actor Bodhi Elfman and they have two children.

Thomas Gibson as Greg Montgomery

Born on July 3, 1962, in Charleston, South Carolina, Thomas Gibson played the role of Greg Montgomery, a buttoned-up lawyer who finds himself drawn to Dharma's unconventional charm. He was twice nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on Dharma and Greg.

Prior to the show, he had a regular spot in As the World Turns (1989) and he starred as Daniel Nyland in Chicago Hope (1994-1998). He also had guest appearances in Caroline in the City and appeared in several films including Barcelona and Eyes Wide Shut.

After the Dharma and Greg, Gibson continued in TV and starred as Aaron Hotchner in the hit show Criminal Minds (2005-2016). He also had guest appearances in several other shows including Two and a Half Men and Hot in Cleveland.

Most recently he was in the movie Shadow Wolves (2019).

Mimi Kennedy as Abby O'Neil

Born on September 25, 1948, in Rochester, New York, Mimi Kennedy played the role of Abby O'Neil, Dharma's hippie mother who shares her daughter's unconventional views on life.

Kennedy got her start on the stage in Neil Simon's Last Of The Red Hot Lovers. She then appeared in several TV series including as Stockard Channing's sister in Just Friends. She also co-starred with Peter Cook in The Two of Us. Kennedy also appeared in Homefront, where she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

After her role in Dharma and Greg, Kennedy went on to play CIA director in The Brink and House Minority Leader in Veep.

She’s also been in several films including In the Loop, Midnight in Paris, Pump Up the Volume, Erin Brockovich, and The Five-Year Engagement.

Kennedy has also written a memoir, Taken to the Stage.

Alan Rachins as Larry Finkelstein

Born October 3, 1942, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Alan Rachins played the role of Larry Finkelstein, Dharma’s hippie dad.

Prior to Dharma and Greg, Rachins starred in L.A. Law from 1986-1994 in the role of Douglas Brackman, Jr. He was also in several movies including Showgirls (1995).

Post Dharma, Rachins was the voice of Norman Osbourne in The Spectacular Spider-Man from 2008-2009. He also had guest appearances on several shows including General Hospital, Grey’s Anatomy and NCIS. Most recently he was in 2023’s The Light Above.

Joel Murray as Peter Cavanaugh

Born April 17, 1963 in Wilmette, Illinois, Joel Murray played the role of Peter Cavanaugh, Greg’s friend and the unreliable coworker lawyer at the Justice Department.

Murray is also brother to the famous actor, Bill Murray.

Prior to Dharma, from 1992-1995 he starred as Ray Litvak in the series Love & War. He also had guest appearances in several sitcoms including The Nanny, The Drew Carey Show and Blossom.

Immediately after Dharma, Murray landed the regular role of Danny Fitzsimmons in Still Standing from 2003-2006. He then when on to appear in several hit shows including Mad Men, Heels, Shrink and Two and a Half Men. Most recently he was in the movie Merry Good Enough (2023).

Susan Sullivan as Katherine Montgomery

Born on November 18, 1942, in New York City, New York, Susan Sullivan portrayed Katherine Montgomery, Greg's sophisticated and overbearing mother who clashes with Dharma's unconventional lifestyle.

Sullivan started her career on stage in Broadway’s Jimmy Shine opposite Dustin Hoffman. From there she starred on Another World and Falcon Crest.

After Dharma, she starred in Castle from 2009-2016. She also appeared in other TV shows including Last Man Standing, Big Hero Six: The Series, and The Kominsky Method. She’s also appeared in several movies including My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Most recently she’s been in the series Smartphone Theatre (2021-23) and the movie The Grotto (2022).
