NEW BEDFORD -- After only four months open, the creative breakfast spot Toast N Jam continues to serve up delicious delicacies such as strawberry shortcake waffles, cookies and cream French toast or homemade pumpkin French toast roll ups.

"People are looking for experiences, and I wanted to focus on providing exceptional service to ensure that our customers have a memorable time at Toast N Jam," said owner Jason Brooks.

"Dessert Breakfast" has become a trending term of late, according to dessertsforbreakfast.com, which is a combination of sweet treats normally served as dessert, such as pastries, cakes and crepes, that are consumed as a morning meal.

Fun facts about having dessert for breakfast

It is a decadent twist on traditional breakfast dishes, often incorporating sugary and indulgent ingredients like chocolate, fruit compote or whipped cream.

In some Asian countries, like Japan, it is common to have sweet desserts such as mochi or red bean soup for breakfast. Many cultures have their own unique desserts for breakfast, such as Chinese egg tarts, Philippine cassava cake and French croissants.

The Breakfast Klub

Located at 1232 Acushnet Ave., guests can indulge in a sweet start to their day where the menu includes irresistible weekly dessert breakfast specials such as strawberry chocolate chip waffles and Nutella pancakes.

The popular cinnamon swirl pancakes, with a cinnamon butter swirl and sugary glaze, started as a special but has now become a permanent fixture thanks to customer demand.

Dillon's Restaurant

Upon celebrating its 30th anniversary in Sept. 2022, Dillon's Restaurant announced it was changing ownership to Melissa Cormier, a longtime fan and cook with a long history in the SouthCoast breakfast and lunch world. Located at 583 County St., Dillon's continues to thrive under Cormier's thumb offering weekly specials such as raspberry white chocolate pancakes or Crème Br?lée French toast. A must try dessert breakfast is the pecan pie stuffed French toast featuring pecans, whipped cream and a delicious pecan filling between two pieces of fried Texas toasts.

Helmed by Tara Gordon, Mimi's Kitchen is just over two years into business, at 130 Nauset St. Open 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day (with an early bird special from 6 to 8 a.m.), Gordon said the most popular items on the menu are "The Mimi" and "The Papa," which are egg, bacon, sausage, pancakes (or French toast) and served with home fries, toast and coffee.

There are also vegan options including a non-dairy pancake.

But Mimi also knows her sweet tooth clientele offering such dessert-like breakfast options as the mouth-watering Reese's Pieces waffle served on a regular waffle with Reese's Pieces and Reese's Puffs cereal with butter, whipped cream and chocolate syrup.

Willow Tree Restaurant

With dessert breakfast specials rotating every week, the popular cream cheese stuffed French toast continues to be a permanent staple on the menu. According to Jennifer Pereira, owner of Willow Tree Restaurant, the tasty treat is made with Texas toast, stuffed with cream cheese or bananas, and topped with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and powdered sugar.

In addition to this breakfast treat, the restaurant also offers Belgian waffles topped with ice cream and other fruit-stuffed crepes, all located at 12 Rockdale Ave.

Tia Maria's European Cafe

Nestled on 42 N. Water St., behind the New Bedford Whaling Museum, Tia Maria's European Cafe? welcomes guests to indulge in their warm and inviting ambiance. Since 2013, this family-owned eatery has been offering a distinctive dining experience. But it's their new dessert breakfast drinks to try such as the iced pastel de nata latte with a caramel swirl and creme br?lée flavor shot, topped with an actual egg tart custard attached to the straw.

Located inside the Kilburn Mill at 127 W Rodney French Blvd, one standout item is the Tiramisu French Toast, made with layers of espresso-infused milk bread, stuffed with our signature cardamom mascarpone filling and topped with premium cocoa. The menu also features a delicious Fig Toast, made with freshly baked bread, indulgent cardamom-mascarpone spread, sweet mixed berries and mission figs, crunchy toasted pistachios and a touch of honey, all served with a refreshing mint garnish.
